Path of Exile: How to Complete The Ruler of Highgate Quest
In Path of Exile, Act 4 introduces one of the most memorable mid-campaign quest structures, and "The Ruler of Highgate" sits right at its core. This quest is not just a simple "go here, kill boss, return" objective-it is a narrative and mechanical gate that forces you to confront two mythic figures from Wraeclast's history while testing your build's survivability, damage output, and movement discipline.
Unlike earlier acts where progression feels relatively linear, this quest splits your journey into two parallel nightmare realms that must both be completed before you can advance. Understanding how each side works-and how they differ-is essential for smooth progression and avoiding unnecessary deaths or backtracking.
Quest Context: Why Highgate Has No Ruler
When you arrive in Highgate during Act 4, you are stepping into a fractured refuge built around the massive volcanic body of the Beast. The settlement itself is not stable politically or spiritually. Instead of a single governing authority, Highgate is shaped by echoes of two legendary figures:
Kaom, the Karui warlord who embodies raw strength, rage, and tribal conquest.
Daresso, the undefeated gladiator whose legacy is built on precision, spectacle, and dominance in the arena.
These two figures are no longer alive in a traditional sense. Instead, they exist as corrupted manifestations inside dreamlike realms tied to the Beast's influence. The quest "The Ruler of Highgate" is essentially your mandate to resolve this instability by confronting both of them.
The logic of the quest is straightforward: as long as Kaom and Daresso exist as powerful echoes, Highgate cannot move forward toward confronting the true threat beneath the mountain.
Starting the Quest in Highgate
Once Act 4 progresses to the appropriate point, you gain access to Highgate as your central hub. NPCs such as Petarus, Vanja, Dialla, and Oyun provide context about the Beast and the fractured nature of reality beneath Wraeclast.
At this stage, the quest is formally assigned, and you are directed toward two separate dream entrances:
Kaom's Dream, representing destruction, fire, and brute force.
Daresso's Dream, representing illusion, combat artistry, and controlled violence.
You are free to choose the order in which you tackle them, and this choice does slightly influence pacing but not the overall outcome of the quest.
Kaom's Dream: Entering the Realm of Rage
Kaom's Dream is one of the most physically punishing zones in Act 4. It is themed around volcanic terrain, burning ground effects, and relentless melee aggression.
From the moment you enter, the environment communicates danger. Lava flows, ash-covered terrain, and aggressive enemy packs create a sense of constant pressure. The zone design is relatively linear, but the density of enemies makes it feel oppressive if your character is not properly prepared. You can buy POE currency to prepare quickly.
Enemies and Environment
The enemies inside Kaom's Dream are heavily melee-focused, often rushing the player in groups. Many of them deal physical damage that is partially converted into fire damage, which makes resistance layering extremely important.
Burning ground effects are common throughout the zone, meaning standing still is often punished even outside of combat. This creates a gameplay loop where movement is not optional but required for survival.
Characters with low fire resistance or weak sustain will feel this zone significantly more than others.
Kaom Boss Fight: Kaom, King of the Karui
Kaom himself is a straightforward but punishing boss. Unlike complex mechanical fights later in the game, Kaom relies on raw strength and timing-based punishment.
His primary threat comes from heavy slam attacks that can deal massive burst physical damage. These attacks are often slow and telegraphed, but their impact is severe enough that misreading them can result in instant death for underprepared characters.
He also uses fire-based abilities that apply burning effects over time, adding pressure even after you have avoided the initial hit.
How to Approach Kaom
The key to this fight is spacing and discipline. Staying too close for too long is dangerous, but staying too far without damage uptime will extend the fight unnecessarily, increasing the chance of mistakes.
The safest approach is to maintain mid-range positioning and react only when Kaom begins his slow telegraphed attacks. Movement skills such as Flame Dash, Dash, or Leap Slam are extremely valuable here because they allow instant repositioning when a slam begins.
Sustained damage builds tend to perform well as long as they can maintain mobility. Burst-only builds may struggle if they cannot safely re-engage after dodging.
Once Kaom is defeated, his dream collapses, symbolically removing one of Highgate's "false rulers."
Daresso's Dream: The Illusion of Control
If Kaom's Dream is raw chaos, Daresso's Dream is controlled violence disguised as performance. This zone is structured like a series of gladiatorial arenas, where each section locks you into combat until all enemies are defeated.
The atmosphere is very different: instead of lava and destruction, you encounter grand arenas, shifting platforms, and staged combat encounters that feel almost theatrical.
However, the difficulty should not be underestimated. While Kaom's Dream punishes lack of defense, Daresso's Dream punishes lack of reaction speed and awareness.
Enemies and Combat Flow in Daresso's Dream
Enemies in this zone are generally fast, aggressive, and often capable of sudden bursts of movement. Some behave like duelists, closing gaps quickly and applying pressure before you can stabilize.
Arena-style gating means you cannot simply bypass enemies. You are forced to engage in controlled fights in confined spaces, which removes the ability to kite freely in many situations.
This creates a very different stress profile compared to Kaom's Dream. Instead of environmental hazards, the danger comes from direct combat pressure.
Daresso Boss Fight: Daresso, King of Swords
Daresso is one of the most mechanically expressive bosses in the campaign up to this point. His fight revolves around mobility, sudden repositioning, and burst attack windows.
He frequently moves across the arena rapidly, making him difficult to track if you are not paying attention. His attacks are fast and often come in combinations rather than single heavy hits.
As the fight progresses, he may introduce illusions or clone-like mechanics that increase visual complexity and make tracking his real position more difficult.
How to Approach Daresso
The core principle in this fight is never committing to long stationary attacks unless you are certain of his position and recovery state.
Unlike Kaom, where you can safely "out-tank" certain phases, Daresso demands constant movement awareness. If you stand still for too long, you risk being caught in a burst combo that can delete a significant portion of your life pool.
The most effective strategy is to treat Daresso like a duelist: hit, reposition, observe, and re-engage only during safe windows. Movement skills are not optional here-they are fundamental.
Once defeated, Daresso's dream collapses in a similar fashion to Kaom's, signifying the removal of Highgate's second fractured influence.
Returning to Highgate and Quest Completion
After both Kaom and Daresso are defeated, you return to Highgate to complete the quest. NPC dialogue reflects that both dream constructs have been resolved, and the influence they exerted over the region has been broken.
This is a major narrative transition point. Highgate is no longer held in balance by two competing mythic forces. Instead, the path forward into the Beast's inner structure becomes accessible.
The quest completes once both objectives are verified, and you are directed toward the next major area: the deeper sections of the Beast, where the story begins to shift toward the confrontation with Malachai.
Reward Structure and Progression Importance
While the quest does provide standard campaign rewards such as passive skill points and Path of exile currency, its real importance lies in gating and difficulty calibration.
Both Kaom and Daresso serve as mid-campaign skill checks. Kaom tests whether your defensive layers are sufficient to handle burst physical and fire damage. Daresso tests whether your movement, reaction time, and combat awareness are developed enough for faster boss mechanics.
Final Thoughts
"The Ruler of Highgate" is a defining Act 4 quest in Path of Exile because it combines narrative depth with mechanical testing in a clean dual-boss structure. Kaom and Daresso represent two extremes of combat philosophy: unstoppable force and precise execution.
Once it is complete, Highgate's fractured mythology collapses, and the path forward leads deeper into the Beast's domain, where even greater dangers await.
