Old School RuneScape: How to Prepare for the Launch of Sailing
After more than a decade, Old School RuneScape is finally adding a brand-new skill - Sailing. It’s the first new skill since the game’s 2013 relaunch, and it’s arriving much sooner than anyone expected. With less than a month to go, players are scrambling to prepare - not only to make the most of the new content, but also to protect their bank value from the inevitable market crash that always comes with a major update. Whether you’re stocking supplies, planning investments, or looking to buy OSRS gold to stay ahead of the curve, this guide breaks down everything you need to know to get ready: how to safeguard your gold, what to sell or hold, which skills to train, and how to make money once Sailing sets sail.
1. Protecting Your Bank from the Market Crash
If you’ve played OSRS through a big update before, you already know what’s coming: a market-wide crash. Every major update sends prices tumbling, and Sailing will likely cause one of the biggest we’ve ever seen. High-value gear such as Voidwaker, Inquisitor’s armor, and Dragon claws have already been trending downward. This time, the shift could be even more severe.
That doesn’t mean you should panic sell everything - but it does mean it’s time to be strategic. Go through your bank carefully and liquidate items you don’t actively use. Keep your core PvM and PvP gear; selling now and rebuying later can cost millions in taxes and lost opportunity. But any unnecessary supplies or outdated consumables should go. Cash will have massive buying power when the market dips, allowing you to reinvest once prices stabilize.
Meanwhile, merchers are already preparing to control the market for new Sailing materials. Expect them to hoard gold and dump existing stockpiles to free up capital. That sell-off will only worsen the pre-release crash. By the time the skill launches, GP will be king - and you’ll want plenty of it on hand.
2. What to Sell - and What to Hold
One of the most important parts of preparation is identifying which items will become obsolete. Sailing introduces eight new fish, several new ores, logs, and crafting materials - all designed to outclass current options.
Food is one of the clearest examples. The new best-in-slot (BIS) fish will make existing staples like anglerfish, karambwans, and dark crabs largely irrelevant. Players will switch to new foods such as Halibut (a combo food replacing karambwans) or Marlin, which heals 24 HP - the highest single-action heal in the game. If your bank is full of old food, sell it now before prices nosedive.
On the other hand, construction-related supplies are about to skyrocket. Sailing ties directly into Construction for shipbuilding and upgrades, with requirements reaching up to level 84. Items like planks, logs, nails, and bars are safe long-term holds. Even shops selling bolts of cloth or plank materials may be bought out by bots on launch day, creating shortages. If you have the GP, investing in Construction supplies is one of the safest bets heading into November.
3. Skill Preparation Before Launch
If you want a head start when Sailing launches, the best thing you can do now is train Construction. Many parts of shipbuilding - from hulls to upgrades - require Construction levels and materials. Players who already have the supplies banked will save millions in the first few days.
Even if you already have 99 Construction, you’ll benefit from stocking up. Sailing’s early leveling process is expected to work similarly to Construction: building and upgrading parts of your ship for experience. Regular, oak, teak, and mahogany planks will be needed for lower levels, while new types of planks will unlock later - and those will be extremely expensive.
If your goal is to profit early, prepare now by gathering supplies for Fletching, Mining, Smithing, and Fishing, since all will tie into Sailing content.
4. Early Money-Making Opportunities
Sailing is bringing a flood of new resources into the game, and during the first few weeks, everything will sell for premium prices. Even low- and mid-level players can capitalize by focusing on skilling.
· Woodcutting: Cut and sell the new types of logs used for planks and boat crafting.
· Fishing: Catch new BIS fish - players will pay insane amounts for Halibut and Marlin early on.
· Mining & Smithing: Mine and smelt the new ores, which are required for both ship upgrades and dragon cannonballs.
· Fletching: Craft the new blowpipes made from top-tier logs.
These methods will be simple, accessible, and profitable during the initial launch window when demand far outpaces supply.
5. Embrace the Adventure
Above all, remember that Sailing’s release is a historic moment for Old School RuneScape. It’s the first new skill in over 12 years - something most players thought would never happen. Whether you’re preparing to race for 99, flipping markets, stocking up on cheap RuneScape gold, or exploring uncharted seas, don’t forget to enjoy the experience. Sailing represents more than just a new skill; it’s a new era for the game. So protect your bank, train your Construction, and get your crew ready, the seas of Gielinor are finally opening for adventure.
