How to Get Blade of the Old Religion in Diablo 2 Resurrected
Many newer players become confused because the Blade of the Old Religion is tied to multiple quests and regions throughout Act 3. Unlike standard equipment drops, the item only appears during a specific portion of the story, and obtaining it requires traveling through several jungle zones filled with dangerous enemies.
Understanding exactly where to find the blade and how it fits into the Act 3 progression makes the entire Kurast section much easier to complete.
What Is the Blade of the Old Religion?
The Blade of the Old Religion is a quest dagger connected to Khalim, a legendary priest of the Zakarum religion. During Act 3, Deckard Cain and Ormus explain that Mephisto corrupted the Zakarum faith and transformed Kurast into a nightmare overrun by demons and fanatic cultists.
To stop Mephisto, players must recreate Khalim's Will, an ancient flail capable of destroying the magical Compelling Orb that blocks access to the Durance of Hate. The Blade of the Old Religion is one of the required quest components needed during this process.
The item itself is not designed for combat effectiveness. Its primary purpose is advancing the story and helping players progress deeper into Act 3.
Starting the Quest Chain
The Blade of the Old Religion becomes relevant shortly after arriving in Kurast Docks. After speaking with Deckard Cain and Ormus, players learn about the corruption spreading throughout the region. Eventually, the storyline directs players toward the ruined jungles and temples surrounding Kurast.
As you explore deeper into Act 3, you encounter Alkor, Hratli, Asheara, and other NPCs who explain the tragic downfall of the Zakarum religion. Mephisto's influence has twisted both the land and its people, creating one of the darkest atmospheres in Diablo 2.
The Blade of the Old Religion is specifically connected to the search for Khalim's relics. These relics include Khalim's Eye, Khalim's Heart, Khalim's Brain, and the flail itself. Together, they form Khalim's Will.
Before players can complete the weapon, they must first recover several sacred components scattered throughout Kurast.
Where to Find the Blade of the Old Religion
The Blade of the Old Religion is found during the "Blade of the Old Religion" quest in Act 3. The item drops from a unique enemy called Battlemaid Sarina inside the Ruined Temple located in Kurast Bazaar.
To reach the correct location, players must progress through several jungle zones connected to Kurast. The route generally leads through the Spider Forest, Great Marsh, Flayer Jungle, Lower Kurast, Kurast Bazaar, and eventually the temple districts.
The Ruined Temple is one of several dungeon entrances scattered throughout Kurast Bazaar. Since multiple temples exist in the area, new players sometimes enter the wrong dungeon and become confused when the quest does not progress.
Inside the Ruined Temple, players eventually encounter Battlemaid Sarina surrounded by zealots and corrupted followers. Defeating her causes the Blade of the Old Religion to drop automatically.
After recovering the blade, players return it to Alkor in Kurast Docks to complete the quest.
Reaching Kurast Bazaar
Before you can obtain the Blade of the Old Religion, you must survive the dangerous jungle zones leading toward Kurast.
Act 3 is known for its confusing layouts and maze-like outdoor areas. Many players consider it one of the most frustrating acts to navigate because of the dense terrain and winding pathways.
The Spider Forest and Flayer Jungle are filled with aggressive enemies such as Flayers, Thorned Hulks, giant spiders, and shamans. These enemies frequently ambush players from off-screen, especially in narrow jungle paths.
The Flayers are particularly dangerous because they attack in large swarms and move extremely quickly. Even well-geared characters can become overwhelmed if surrounded.
After pushing through the jungle regions, players eventually reach Lower Kurast and later Kurast Bazaar. These ruined cities are heavily corrupted by Mephisto's influence and filled with undead priests, zealots, and demonic enemies.
Once you arrive in Kurast Bazaar, locating the Ruined Temple becomes your next objective.
Defeating Battlemaid Sarina
Battlemaid Sarina serves as the main enemy guarding the Blade of the Old Religion. She appears as a unique monster surrounded by fanatical followers inside the Ruined Temple.
Although Sarina herself is not considered one of Act 3's hardest bosses, the temple can still be dangerous because of enemy density and elemental attacks.
The confined rooms inside the temple make positioning important, especially for ranged characters. Melee builds generally handle the area more comfortably because enemies tend to rush directly into close combat.
Sorceresses often rely on teleportation and crowd-control spells to avoid becoming trapped. Necromancers usually perform well thanks to summons absorbing enemy aggression. Paladins and Barbarians can typically tank through most encounters if properly leveled.
After Battlemaid Sarina is defeated, the Blade of the Old Religion drops automatically as a quest item. Unlike random loot, the blade is guaranteed to appear during the quest progression. You can also buy D2R Ladder Items to improve your character.
Returning the Blade to Alkor
Once you obtain the Blade of the Old Religion, the next step is returning to Kurast Docks and speaking with Alkor.
Alkor explains more about the blade's historical significance and rewards the player for recovering it. Completing the quest grants a permanent increase to maximum life, making it one of the more useful optional rewards in Act 3.
Because the reward permanently boosts health, most players complete the quest on every difficulty.
The quest itself is technically optional for story progression, but skipping it means permanently losing the life bonus for that difficulty level.
How the Blade Connects to Khalim's Will
Many players confuse the Blade of the Old Religion with Khalim's Will because both are tied to the same general storyline.
The Blade of the Old Religion is actually a separate side quest involving Alkor and the corrupted Zakarum temples. However, it thematically overlaps with the larger hunt for Khalim's relics.
To create Khalim's Will, players must collect Khalim's Eye from the Spider Cavern, Khalim's Brain from the Flayer Dungeon, Khalim's Heart from the Sewers beneath Kurast, and Khalim's Flail from Travincal. These items are then combined inside the Horadric Cube.
The completed flail is used to destroy the Compelling Orb blocking entrance to the Durance of Hate.
Because both questlines involve ancient Zakarum artifacts and temple exploration, many players naturally associate the Blade of the Old Religion with Khalim's relic hunt.
Why Act 3 Feels Different
The Blade of the Old Religion quest highlights many of the reasons Act 3 feels unique compared to the rest of Diablo 2.
Unlike the open deserts of Act 2 or the straightforward wilderness of Act 1, Kurast focuses heavily on dense jungles, ancient ruins, and interconnected temples. The atmosphere constantly reinforces the idea that the once-great Zakarum civilization has collapsed into corruption and madness.
The music, environmental design, and enemy types all contribute to a darker tone. Many longtime Diablo fans still remember their first journey through the jungles because of how oppressive and mysterious the act feels.
Diablo II: Resurrected significantly upgraded these environments with improved lighting, weather effects, and high-resolution textures while maintaining the original gameplay structure.
The Ruined Temple itself showcases this design philosophy perfectly. Narrow corridors, cursed enemies, and decaying architecture create an atmosphere that feels dangerous even before encountering Battlemaid Sarina.
Final Thoughts
Getting the Blade of the Old Religion in Diablo 2 Resurrected requires players to progress deep into Act 3 and defeat Battlemaid Sarina inside the Ruined Temple in Kurast Bazaar.
Although the quest itself is fairly straightforward once you know the correct location, reaching the temple can be challenging because of the dangerous jungle regions and confusing layouts throughout Kurast.
The Blade of the Old Religion is ultimately more than just a simple quest item. It represents another piece of the tragic history surrounding the Zakarum faith and Mephisto's corruption of Kurast.
