Elden Ring: How to Destroy Malenia
This guide will break down her abilities, weaknesses, and strategies for both melee and ranged builds so you can bring her down.
1. How to Reach Malenia
Malenia is tucked deep in the optional Haligtree area.
Steps to Unlock Her Arena:
Collect Haligtree Medallion Halves
Right Half: Found in the Village of the Albinaurics.
Left Half: Looted from Commander Niall in Castle Sol.
Use the Lift of Rold to access the Consecrated Snowfield.
Complete Ordina, Liturgical Town puzzle to open the path to Miquella’s Haligtree.
Fight through the Haligtree down to Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree.
Malenia awaits in the large flower arena at the bottom.
2. Fight Overview
Malenia’s fight has two phases:
Phase 1: Blade of Miquella
Fast katana attacks, Waterfowl Dance, and life-steal from every hit (even blocked).
Phase 2: Goddess of Rot
Gains scarlet rot attacks, clones, and more aggressive movement.
3. Key Mechanics to Watch Out For
Life-Steal
Every time she lands a hit — even on a shield — she heals a chunk of HP.
This means you can’t just turtle behind a shield forever.
Waterfowl Dance
Her signature, multi-slash dive combo.
She leaps into the air and pauses before unleashing a flurry.
Rolling toward her at the right timing (or using Bloodhound’s Step) is the safest dodge method.
Scarlet Rot Bloom (Phase 2)
At the start of Phase 2, she triggers a large rot explosion.
Sprint away immediately, or roll with high Immunity gear to avoid damage.
4. Preparation Before the Fight
Gear & Talismans
Miquella’s Needle (optional, if you want to cleanse rot mid-fight).
Immunizing Horn Charm: Boosts rot resistance.
Green Turtle Talisman or Great-Jar’s Arsenal for stamina management.
Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman for physical damage negation.
Weapons
Fast weapons with bleed buildup (Rivers of Blood, Uchigatana, or Bloodhound’s Fang).
Cold infusion weapons to slow her movement with frostbite.
Powerstancing katanas or curved swords for rapid status buildup.
Spirit Summons
Mimic Tear is top-tier — can keep her busy while applying status.
Black Knife Tiche for consistent chip damage and mobility.
5. Phase 1 Strategy – Blade of Miquella
Play Patiently: Don’t go for long combos — 1–2 hits, then disengage.
Dodge Windows: Many of her sword swings can be roll-dodged at the last second.
Bait Attacks: Circle her at mid-range; she’ll often whiff or use slow lunges you can punish.
Status Buildup: Bleed and frost are both very effective — they chunk her HP even through her heals.
Waterfowl Dance Response:
Roll toward her on the first slash.
Roll again immediately after the pause.
Create space before the last flurry.
6. Phase 2 Strategy – Goddess of Rot
Opening Explosion: Sprint away or roll through with high rot resistance.
Clone Attacks: She’ll summon mirror images that dash at you — roll toward them as they swing.
Aerial Grab: She may leap and grab you — roll at the last moment to avoid massive damage.
Rot Management: If afflicted, use Preserving Boluses or gear with high Immunity.
Aggression Windows: After her big rot bloom or clone combo, she has longer recovery frames.
7. Ranged & Magic Strategy
Keep mid-range distance so she uses lunging slashes instead of quick combos.
Sorceries like Rock Sling, Comet Azur, or Night Comet can punish openings.
Incantations like Swarm of Flies can apply bleed from a distance.
In Phase 2, be ready to dodge her dive attacks — they can cross the arena quickly.
8. Co-op and Spirit Summon Tactics
Two-Player Co-op: One player baits Waterfowl Dance while the other attacks.
Spirit Distraction: Let your summon draw aggro while you punish her back.
Beware of Healing: If your ally or spirit keeps getting hit, she heals more — so summons should be evasive.
9. Common Mistakes to Avoid
Overcommitting: More than 2–3 hits gives her a free punish.
Blocking Too Much: She heals even on blocked hits — prioritize dodging.
Ignoring Rot Resistance: In Phase 2, rot will kill you faster than her sword if you’re unprepared.
Panicking During Waterfowl Dance: Learn the dodge rhythm; panic rolling will get you shredded.
10. Rewards for Victory
Defeating Malenia rewards:
Malenia’s Great Rune: Boosts HP recovery from attacks.
Remembrance of the Rot Goddess: Can be exchanged for her Hand of Malenia katana or Scarlet Aeonia incantation.
Massive runes and buy Elden Ring Runes bragging rights — she’s considered the hardest fight in Elden Ring.
Final Thoughts
Malenia is designed to test your mastery of Elden Ring’s combat. She punishes greed, rewards patience, and forces you to learn her attack patterns. With the right preparation, status effect application, and disciplined play, you can turn this feared fight into one of your most satisfying victories in the Lands Between.
Once you’ve beaten her, you’ll understand why many players consider her the pinnacle boss of FromSoftware design — and why few victories feel as sweet.
